Nine NJIT men's fencers represented the Highlanders at the 2022 Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals and were paced by junior Kevin Katayama who picked up a top-nine finish in the men's foil competition hosted by Princeton University at Jadwin Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Katayama, seeded No. 18, recorded a ninth place finish in the men's foil. Cristian Candescu, seeded No. 11, finished 14th followed by Thomas Manley (placed 21st; seeded No. 14) and Josh Schaefer (placed 34th; seeded No. 36).
In the men's epee competition, Rourke Hillyer led the Highlanders with a 12th place finish. Hillyer entered the Regional seeded No. 17. Teammate Brett Bogert placed 28th (seeded No. 22), Robert Hondor (placed 31st; seeded No. 24) and Guido Liwski ( placed 34th; seeded No. 31).
Pedro D'Avila, the lone Highlander competing in the men's saber competition, placed 20th after being seeded No. 23.
The NCAA Championships are set for March 24-27 at Notre Dame. The Mid-Atlantic/South region has seven spots allocated in every weapon except for men's épée, where it has six. All six weapons have two national at-large spots each. Qualification to the NCAA Championships will be based 40 percent on regular-season results and 60 percent on finish at the NCAA regional.
An announcement on who qualified for the 2022 NCAA Championships will be announced in the coming days on NJITHighlanders.com and NJIT Fencing social media platforms.
