Black History Month 2022
Black History Month is observed nationally throughout the month of February each year, and NJIT is proud to take this time to celebrate the impact of Black history on our university and our nation. The diversity of NJIT is among its greatest strengths, and the impact of Black culture and history on our university cannot be overstated.
Our Black students, faculty and staff are significant contributors to the diversity of our university community. It has been documented exhaustively that diversity contributes to positive learning outcomes, and work teams that consist of individuals with varied backgrounds, perspectives, ethnicities, races, belief systems, and socio-economic statuses are proven to achieve greater results than those that lack such diversity. Learning happens when we are exposed to a broad array of perspectives and have the opportunity to share information and knowledge gathered through our lived experiences. This is evident in what we see every day at NJIT.
We are fortunate to be one of the most diverse campuses in the entire nation, and we are a top 20 university in the United States for graduating Black engineers. In addition, 62% of all engineering degrees awarded to African-American and Hispanic students by New Jersey public institutions are awarded by NJIT.
Throughout the next month, we will host numerous events that offer opportunities for learning and sharing with one another and for raising awareness of critical issues. Our opening ceremony will take place on February 4, 2022, at 11:30 am in the Atrium, and a complete listing of events can be found here. Please join me in taking advantage of these opportunities throughout Black History Month to learn more about the achievements, contributions, challenges, and experiences of Black Americans throughout history.
