Minority Engineer Recognizes NJIT as a 'Top 20 University'
New Jersey Institute of Technology is among Minority Engineer magazine’s “Top 20 Universities” for 2021.
The selection is based on a survey of the publication’s readers on the diversity of the curriculum, student body and faculty and the diversity and inclusivity of the learning environment. The readers are engineering students and professionals who identify as minorities. Other honorees this year include Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology and Harvard University.
Minority Engineer’s recognition comes as NJIT works to expand its base of Hispanic and Latinx students, faculty and staff and spark interest in STEM among Newark high school students. The university’s Hispanic Latinx Leadership Council is leading the former, while the latter comprises a Forensic Science Initiative that’s supported by a $1.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The initiative is designed to create a pathway to college for underserved students.
Diversity is one of the core values of NJIT’s strategic plan and evident in its student body. This fall, NJIT welcomed its most diverse class of first-year students ever, with 25% identifying as Hispanic or Latinx, 22% as Asian and 10% as Black or African-American.
