Marco Matteucci Tabbed as NJIT Men's Tennis Head Coach
Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Lenny Kaplan has announced the hiring of Marco Matteucci as NJIT's next Head Coach for men's tennis. Matteucci replaces former Head Coach Ira Miller, who recently stepped down following seven seasons in charge of the Highlanders' program.
"We are very excited to name Marco as our new Head Coach for men's tennis here at NJIT," announced Kaplan.."He was a very successful player in college winning national titles, and over the years has been able to take his on court success and translate it to his coaching. He has enjoyed coaching success from his Division II beginnings straight through the Power 5 level in Division I at a variety of Universities. We had a very good candidate pool, and Marco rose to the top."
Matteucci, who helped lead West Florida to a pair of Division II National Championships in the mid-2000's, comes to NJIT following two seasons as Head Coach of the men's and women's tennis programs at La Salle.
Prior to his time at La Salle, Matteucci also earned a great deal of experience as an Assistant Coach at several of the top tennis programs in the country including Arizona and Baylor, and locally at Columbia.
Matteucci has also served as a group manager at the prestigious Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, FL.
"I am very excited to have been chosen to be the next Head Men's Tennis Coach and be a part of NJIT's Athletic Department," explained Matteucci. "I would like to thank Lenny Kaplan and Peg Hefferan along with the members of the search committee for giving me the opportunity to lead what is already an outstanding program. I want to thank Coach Miller for having created such a solid team over the years and leaving me with a great group of young men. I look forward to developing our student-athletes and provide them the best experience possible entering the Southland Conference."
Matteucci's first college coaching position came at West Florida during the 2006-07 season. Other coaching highlights include bringing a Top-10 recruiting class to Columbia in 2009, and helping lead Baylor to Big 12 regular season and tournament championships and a Sweet 16 berth in 2016.
A native of Queens, Matteucci has also spent time working alongside the United States Tennis Association, training and assimilating coaches to work with Playsight data analysis software.
The 2021-22 NJIT men's tennis schedule will be released in early September.
