Tips n Tricks for Incoming Students
Welcome to campus, incoming Highlanders! We want to make sure your experience coming to NJIT is as smooth as possible, so we’ve asked current students what their best tips are to transition into what it’s like on campus!
Join clubs.
One of the best ways to acclimate yourself to your new environment is to dive right in. NJIT hosts the activity fair at the beginning of the semester. Find clubs that suit your interests - with over 200 clubs on campus, there’s going to be one that piques your interest. View the full list of clubs here - and take advantage of Highlander Hub, which will help you find all events hosted on campus and virtually.
Make connections.
NJIT is here to help your future career, so we want you to take advantage of all of the connections you can make here on campus. Connecting and collaborating with students from class can help you study for a big exam or work on a major project together. Also be sure to utilize all that Career Development Services has to offer, including the Career Fairs. CDS is here to guide you in your career journey. (psst… Handshake is a great tool to discover open co-ops and internships)
Use your available resources.
NJIT is known for its unlimited amount of resources, including labs, the Robert W. Van Houten Library, and more. Did you know that NJIT has a Bloomberg Terminal lab? The Makerspace is also available as a resource to all - You don’t have to be an engineer in order to take advantage of everything the Makerspace has to offer! Register for Makerspace 101 to get started creating. Connecting with your professors during office hours or after class can be valuable, even if you're not facing academic challenges. Professors often hold a wealth of insights about navigating college life, drawing from their own extensive experiences as students. Don't hesitate to tap into their wisdom—it can make your journey smoother!
Find a balance.
The most important part of finding balance is to make sure you are taking care of yourself. One of the biggest tips our current students gave us was to make sure to eat - NJIT’s campus offers a variety of options from Gourmet Dining Services, which you can find here. We’ll also have a list of places to eat in Newark coming up shortly. It’s also important to take care of your mental health - here are some tips for stress. Exercise may also aid in that, so be sure to take advantage of NJIT’s fitness facilities.
Practice proper preparation.
Study as you learn - it can be overwhelming to study a few days before a test for a bunch of chapters. Look into course schedules and prep for the next semester to ensure you have a schedule that works for you. It also may be helpful to get to know your professors on day one of classes - first impressions go a long way! Students also suggested adding an extra 6 minutes to your commute so you can find a spot in the parking decks and walk from there.
