Passing of Bernard Koplik, Chairman of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Bernard Koplik, a longtime chairman of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) at a pivotal time in the university’s history and a beloved mentor and friend to both faculty and students, passed away on March 14. Koplik, who served on NJIT’s faculty for 37 years, focused on solid mechanics, and in particular, the behavior of a variety of materials, from steel to concrete, under stress and strain. He played a key role in NJIT’s transition from a primarily teaching-focused institution to an ambitious research university.
“During this time, he was recognized as a bridge builder and a leader in pursuit of excellence in education and research on behalf of our students and faculty,” recalled NJIT Provost Fadi Deek. “He was considered a model department chair, and his colleagues in administration routinely sought his counsel.”
Koplik was honored with Newark College of Engineering’s “Excellence in Teaching” award in 2003, four years after the award was established. Two years later, he was named a master teacher, the highest distinction given by the provost to tenured NJIT faculty members who have a sustained record of recognized teaching excellence.
“He loved teaching and continued with us even after he retired,” recounted Joga Rao, the current chairman of the MIE department. “He really enjoyed being around students and mentoring them.”
Revered for his kindness and wit, he was a friend to many. “We all simply knew him as Bernie,” as Deek put it.
NJIT President Joel Bloom recalls meeting Koplik more than 30 years ago when he first arrived at NJIT.
“Bernie "adopted" me as a new vice president at the time, because of our City College of New York and Brooklyn roots,” Bloom said. “His advice, wisdom, ethics, intelligence and humor made him a friend you wanted to spend time with.”
