College of Computing Welcomes New Faculty in AI, Databases, Networking
Ying Wu College of Computing at NJIT welcomed this fall four new faculty members. Focused on expanding its footprint in research and teaching, these strategic faculty hires are an important element of that effort, bringing an impressive depth and breadth of knowledge to the college and its students.
“I am delighted to welcome our newest faculty members to Ying Wu College of Computing,” said Dean Craig Gotsman. “Even with the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, our enrollment for the current academic year is up and we are blessed with an enthusiastic and diverse student body. We are fortunate to be able to attract such talented instructors to the college, experts from academia, government and industry who create exceptional educational experiences for our students.”
Bassel Arafeh, Senior University Lecturer, Computer Science
Bassel Arafeh received his Ph.D. in computer science from Texas A&M University. Arafeh has many years of teaching experience, instructing undergraduate and graduate students in both computer science and in computer engineering. Before joining the computer science department at NJIT, Arafeh was an associate professor at the University of Louisville. Among his research interests are wireless ad hoc and sensor networks, parallel and distributed computing systems, mapping, allocation and scheduling. Arafeh has authored a number of journal and conference papers. Students enrolled in Programming Language Concepts have a chance to learn from Arafeh this semester.
Canan Eren, Senior University Lecturer, Computer Science
Canan Eren received her Ph.D. in computer science from City University of New York. Before joining NJIT, Eren worked as an assistant professor at Dokuz Eylul University (Turkey) and at Kean University. She has published articles and a book on bi-temporal data and bi-temporal query languages. Among Eren’s research interests are clinical intelligence, clinical data warehouses, data mining, object-relational databases and temporal databases. During her first semester at NJIT, Eren is teaching Database System Design and Management and Advanced Database System Design.
David Li, Senior University Lecturer, Computer Science
David Li first studied astrophysics at Johns Hopkins University and then received an M.S. in computer science from Brandeis University. He brings 20 years of experience as tech lead and senior executive to NJIT. Li is not new to NJIT or its students, having joined the compute science department in 2018 as an adjunct instructor teaching a course in machine learning. Among his current research interests are the cross-industry applications of machine learning and big data. He has published and presented at IEEE conferences, Analytical Chemistry and ACS national meetings. Li is currently teaching Machine Learning and Data Analytics with R Programming.
Pantelis Monogioudis, Professor of Practice, Computer Science
Pantelis Monogioudis received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Surrey, UK. Monogioudis, a recognized industry leader with more than twenty years of experience in leading research and development teams, joined the computer science faculty this summer. His career spans the fields of wireless communications/information theory, defining 3G and 4G technologies, and combining machine learning for self-organizing networks, device localization and LTE/5G mm-wave network optimization. More recently, Monogioudis was the head of Applied Machine Learning Research at Bell Laboratories, working in the space of real-time video scene understanding at the network edge. Contributing to open source, he has been a voting member in the technical advisory board of the Linux Foundation on AI. Students know Monogioudis from his courses Roadmap to Computing, Network Architecture & Protocols, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning. Monogioudis is also CEO of the technology company, Aegean AI.
