Men's Volleyball Duo to Represent Spanish National Team at 2019 CEV European Golden League
NJIT men's volleyball rising junior Alvaro Gimeno and incoming freshman Martin de Chavarria will represent the Spanish National Team at the 2019 CEV European Golden League.
Both Gimeno and Chavarria are two of the youngest players on the 22-person Spanish roster for the European Golden League.
Gimeno, who competed with the U20 Spain National Team at the 2018 CEV U20 Volleyball European Championships, was the top point scorer (14) and server against Latvia and top scorer (19) and ranked second as best spiker (16) against Israel. In the finals against Poland, he was the top point scorer (28) and spiker (24).
A two-time first team all-EIVA honoree, NJIT's 6-foot-9 outside hitter from Salou, Spain, ranked in the top five in kills per set (3.31) and total kills (285).
He ranked second in service aces per set (0.44), which ranks 13th in the nation and 12th in hitting percentage (.261) while combining for 17 double-digit kill matches, including a season-best 19 kills at Penn State.
Gimeno earned AVCA National Player of the Week on April 8 and in two seasons at NJIT has combined for 598 kills, 232 digs, 108 total blocks and 83 service aces.
De Chavarria joins the Highlanders from Palma de Mallorca, Spain after attending American International School of Mallorca.
The 6-foot-5 middle blocker is a three-time Spanish League Champion and three-time Spanish League Runner-Up. He played in over 40 International matches with the Junior National Team and current Highlander Gimeno.
The European Golden League is a seven-week event that features the top 12 European nations not participating in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League.
Spain finished the 2018 tournament in ninth place.
