NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing to offer data science programs in Jersey City

Starting fall 2019, New Jersey Institute of Technology’s (NJIT) Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) will offer part-time and full-time graduate-level programs in data science at a location just steps from the Exchange Place PATH station in the waterfront district of Jersey City.

The new location will expand NJIT’s $2.8 billion annual impact on the state’s economy by serving New Jersey residents working in the nearby emerging tech hub of New York City.

YWCC Dean Craig Gotsman said the strong demand for data scientists working in New York City and New Jersey’s Hudson County makes Jersey City the perfect location for these programs.

“Data science is a fast-growing field, and the New York City metropolitan area has the greatest demand for data science professionals among the top 20 metro areas in the country,” Gotsman noted. “In fact, the demand in the New York metro area is double the demand of runner-up San Francisco. Our programs can help transform computing professionals into data scientists to meet this demand.”

NJIT@JerseyCity will be located at 101 Hudson Street on the Jersey City waterfront. Students at that location will develop a deep knowledge of modern computer science and be active participants in projects involving artificial intelligence, big data, analytics, data mining, visualization and machine learning.

Vadim Supitskiy, senior vice president for engineering at Forbes Media, headquartered in Jersey City, said, “Every major company today, including Forbes, uses as much data as it can to enhance its business. Data scientists are in short supply and we welcome NJIT’s initiative to offer a data science program so close to us in Jersey City. It promises to be very popular.”

Michael Smith, chief data officer at Hearst Magazines, headquartered in New York City, said: “Hearst Magazines has been working closely with NJIT as we continue to evolve our data science capabilities across the organization, and we will benefit from having them in even closer proximity. NJIT’s new Jersey City location and data science training program will add value to the tech community, on both sides of the Hudson, in numerous ways.”

Courses will be offered afternoons, evenings and weekends and will be taught by NJIT professors from the university’s main campus. In addition to an M.S. in data science, NJIT @JerseyCity will offer graduate certificates in big data essentials and data mining as well as professional training boot camps.
