NJIT Scores Two Late to Win Series Finale, 3-1, at Stetson to Split Doubleheader

DELAND, FL—NJIT scored a pair of runs late to win the series finale, 3-1, at Stetson, behind a complete game performance from senior Sean Lubreski to the split Sunday's doubleheader while the Hatters took game one, 1-0, at Melching Field in ASUN Conference action.
NJIT snaps a three-game skid, moving to 3-6 in the ASUN, 10-15-1 overall while the Hatters stand at 4-2 in the ASUN, 14-17 overall.
In game one of Sunday's doubleheader, Jorge Arenas knocked out a solo shot in the sixth, which held for the 1-0 victory while in game two, which was scheduled for a seven-inning contest, went to the eighth, as the Highlanders scored a pair of runs to take a 3-1 victory.
Game One | Stetson 1, NJIT 0 (Final)
The lone run in game one came in the bottom of the sixth on a solo shot by Stetson's SS Jorge Arenas to left center for a 1-0 lead. Arenas finished 2-for-4, with one run and one RBI.
Stetson's Daniel Paret (2-0) picked up the win and Vlad Nunez registered his sixth save of the season in the 1-0 shutout. Paret pitching 8.0 innings, allowing seven hits while fanning 12 Highlander batters.
Starting pitcher Tyler Stafflinger (1-2) pitched his first complete game of the season for NJIT, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing one run – solo home run in the sixth – on three hits while striking out three Hatters.
NJIT's DH David Marcano and 2B Brett Helmkamp each went 3-for-3, including a double down the right field line by Helmkamp in the top of the second.
The Highlanders had an opportunity to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the eighth, on a single to left field by Helmkamp but a throw from left field by Stetson cut down the Highlander run at the plate.
Game 2 | NJIT 3, Stetson 1 (Final)
Lubreski (4-4) pitched his third complete game of the season, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing six Hatter hits and one run.
The Highlanders managed five hits and one run off starting pitcher Robbie Peto through seven innings while Danny Garcia (3-1) was credited with the loss, giving up two runs on three hits in the final inning of work.
LF Julio Marcano finished 3-for-4 with one run while RF Matthew Cocciadiferro and 2B Brett Helmkamp each went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Helmkamp drove in one run in the top of the eighth for NJIT.
NJIT got on the board early in game two, with an RBI groundout to shortstop by C Paul Franzoni, scoring Brett Helmkamp, who led off the inning with a single through the right side.
Stetson tied the ball game at 1-1 with a two-out solo home run to left field by C Benito Varela in the bottom of the third.
In the eighth inning for NJIT, Julio Marcano led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by brother David Marcano. Cocciadiferro reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners before 1B Nick Hussey hit a ground ball to third to score Marcano. Helmkamp followed with an RBI single to left field, giving the Highlanders a 3-1 lead.
NJIT will return to action with a mid-week game against Saint Peter's on Tuesday at 3pm in Jersey City, NJ.
