NJIT to Host National Town Hall Meeting on Gentrification in Black America

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will host a free and open-to-the-public town hall meeting Friday, April 5, to assess gentrification in major cities across America, including concerns in Newark, New Jersey.

The town hall, which is part of a larger three-day gentrification summit hosted from April 4-6 by the Institute of the Black World 21st Century and Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, will feature Danny Glover as the keynote speaker. In addition to Glover’s accomplished acting and producing career, he is a longstanding humanitarian with wide-reaching philanthropic efforts advocating for economic justice and access to health care and education. Glover currently serves as United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Goodwill Ambassador and Ambassador for the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent.

Also featured as a special guest on the town hall panel will be Dr. Julianne Malveaux, an economist, author, social and political commentator, and business women. Malveaux, who holds a Ph.D. in economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, currently serves on the board of the Economic Policy Institute and was the 15th president for Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, North Carolina where she led enhancements to the academic curriculum focusing on women's leadership, entrepreneurship, communications and global studies.

Scores of community-based activists, community economic development specialists, urban planners, scholars, elected officials, and faith and civil rights leaders will converge on the Newark summit to explore ways to achieve development without displacing black people and black social, economic, cultural and political institutions. 

Newark was selected as the host city to continue to focus on the progressive, equitable growth and wealth-building strategies and policies advocated by Mayor Baraka’s administration — which are a potential model for the nation.

The town hall will also be broadcast live and will be available on WBAI-FM 99.5 and on https://ibw21.org/.
