NJIT Tennis Hosts Grand Slam Series Event for Special Olympic Athletes
The NJIT men's and women's tennis teams hosted a Tennis Grand Slam Series Event for Special Olympic Athletes on Saturday, November 10, coordinated by the NJIT head coaches Ira Miller, Zaki Abdelrahman and Casey Henderson, the Coach Education and Sports Training Director at the Lawrenceville, New Jersey Special Olympics headquarters.
The day started off with introductions and some warm-up doubles drills run by the NJIT coaches and players. Following the doubles clinic, was a round robin doubles tournament sanctioned by the USTA Middle States Section. The top two round robin finishers then played off to crown the ultimate champions. In addition, the NJIT players ran various fun activity challenges for the players waiting for their turns to play.
Head Coach of the women, Zaki Abdelrahman, had this to say, "I think it was a great event and experience for both teams. Being able to put a smile on the faces of these competitive Special Olympic athletes was a priceless experience."
Men's Coach Ira Miller added, "I was especially proud of both teams today. They brought the right mix of enthusiasm and support for these visiting athletes who came ready to play and compete. We very much appreciate this opportunity to give back to our New Jersey community."
