Sarnoff Symposium Comes to NJIT

Now in its 39th year, the IEEE Sarnoff Symposium is the premier forum in telecom and related topics for researchers, engineers and business executives in the Northeast.  

“It has a long history as a place where industry leaders can share their insights with academia on state-of-the-art research, where the industry is going and the challenges they face,” said Grace (Guiling) Wang, co-chair of this year’s symposium and professor of computer science at NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC).

More than 30 speakers participated in the two-day event. Topics discussed included: artificial intelligence and machine learning, 5G networks, silicon photonics, network function virtualization, software defined networks, edge computing, cloud automation and orchestration, blockchain, Internet of Things, self-driving cars, optical networks, smart cities and drones. 

Keynote speakers for the event were Gulrukh Ahanger of Comcast; Marina Thottan of Nokia Bell Labs; Sree Koratala of Ericsson North America; and Edward W. Felten of Princeton University. 

Tremendous Opportunity for NJIT students

In addition to the knowledge sharing between industry leaders and university researchers, the event also provided an ideal opportunity for NJIT students to hear first-hand how the material they learn in the classroom or lab can help solve real issues facing industry today.

Wang said YWCC students were invited to attend the event. She said the event also opened the door to many of the speakers possibly returning to the university in the future for more interaction with students.

“This was a great place to promote NJIT and our NJIT students, especially the female students. They had the opportunity to see multiple female leaders, who are inspirational role models,” Wang said.
