Dear NJIT Faculty and Staff,

NJIT is a strong and vibrant university that is both an engine of opportunity and a catalyst for technological research and innovation. As president, my primary focus is on assuring the continued ascent of our university and the assurance of our ability to deliver upon its mission while achieving our strategic plan. Doing so necessitates that we do not take our current position for granted, and that we take stock not just of what we are accomplishing but of what is happening around us.

At present there is a confluence of circumstances external to the university that would not be prudent to ignore. The possibility of diminished funding from the federal government as well as the state is something that is a concern for all public institutions of higher education. While undergraduate enrollment has continued to grow at NJIT, which has not been the case for many universities, there has been a sector-wide drop in international enrollment at the master’s degree level. This presents a potential revenue challenge to every university offering such programs, and NJIT is not an exception.

Despite those issues, NJIT is in an enviable position. We must, however, assure that remains so. Therefore, it is necessary to take measured steps to make certain that we remain positioned to achieve our goals and continue the upward trajectory of our great university. As such, university leadership is undergoing a thorough analysis of revenues and expenditures while making strategic decisions about resource allocation in support of NJIT priorities. Specifics will be shared with the members of the President’s Council for communication to the appropriate units within their areas of responsibility.

NJIT is the greatest producer of technological knowledge and talent in New Jersey, and is recognized for preparing students for uncommon success, generating critical research and innovations, partnering with government and industry to spur economic growth, and serving the greater community. By taking these steps, we will assure that NJIT remains all of those things and continues to thrive.
