Men's Tennis Takes Down Binghamton to Improve to 4-0
The NJIT men's tennis team remained unbeaten with its first road win of the season on Sunday as the Highlanders defeated host Binghamton 5-2 for their second win in as many days after Saturday's victory over Bucknell.
"This was a great weekend for us," said Head Coach Marco Matteucci. "We had to fight through some adversity and improve our mental health. Both Bucknell and Binghamton fought hard, but we were able to secure the wins."
NJIT got on the board first as it won two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. The doubles point definitely didn't come easy for the Highlanders with both of their first and second doubles pairings winning via tiebreaker to get the early lead.
At first doubles, Pablo Perez Ramos and Wil Jenkins took their tiebreaker 7-4, while NJIT's second doubles pairing of Pavel Petrov and Oscar Callo von Platen edged their opponents 7-5 in the tiebreaker.
NJIT took the momentum into singles play where Petrov made quick work of his opponent at #5 singles, winning 6-3, 6-0 to put the Highlanders ahead 2-0.
After Binghamton made it 2-1 with a win at #6 singles, Nejc Skorjanc earned a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 victory at #2 singles to put the Highlanders up by two again. Wil Jenkins then clinched the match for NJIT with a 6-1, 7-5 win at #3 singles.
Pablo Perez Ramos grinded out a three-set win at the top singles spot to make the score 5-1 before Binghamton rallied for a win at #4 singles, which made the final score 5-2.
"Being pushed and being successful this early in the season is a good thing," added Matteucci.
The Highlanders return to action on Wednesday when they host St. Joseph's at 4pm in the Naimoli Family Tennis and Recreation Center.
"We're looking forward to returning home for our match on Wednesday," concluded Matteucci.
