Five Highlanders across both teams placed in top 10 overall
The NJIT cross country teams opened their 2023 campaign in the Bronx as participants in the annual Fordham University Fiasco Saturday afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park.
MEN'S RESULTS (8K)
The top performing Highlander on the men's side was sophomore Austin Essel, who just missed out on the top five with a 28:57.90 time that was good enough for sixth overall.
Junior Anthony Dvorsky was right behind Essel in seventh place, logging a 29:00.10 time.
The rest of NJIT's five all fell within the top 15 overall: sophomore William Prevost (11th, 30:25.30), freshman Ethan Kalajian (12th, 30:53.10) and sophomore Fabian Herrera (14th, 31:34.00)
As a team, NJIT placed third (50 pts) behind hosts Fordham (22 pts) and runner-up Manhattan (48 pts)
WOMEN'S RESULTS (5K)
Freshman Sarah Van Ornum provided the best performance of any Highlander, finishing as the runner-up in the women's race with a time of 19:59.00. She was one of only two runners to run a sub-20 minute race.
Two other Highlanders placed in the top ten: senior Katherine Castano (7th, 21:08.10) and junior Nadia Zhecheva (8th, 21:15.80).
Jenna Keith rounded out NJIT's group in 16th place (22:52.90).
