HOW WE GOT HERE
NJIT opened the season with a tough four-game slate against a trio of high-major opponents (St. John's, Seton Hall, RV Pitt) and perennial NCAA qualifier Monmouth. The Highlanders were held scoreless over the course of four losses but the lessons learned from playing such quality competition would pay dividends down the line.
NJIT earned its first wins of the season via a pair of shutouts over Wagner (1-0) and Saint Peter's (6-0). The latter was historic — one goal shy of the Division I single-game school record of seven goals, set four games into head coach Ally's Nick's tenure against Saint Peter's Aug. 29, 2016.
A second four-game winless stretch (0-3-1) was followed by the Highlanders' first-ever America East conference wins over Maine (1-0) and two-time defending champion Stony Brook (1-0).
After two more losses, a draw at UMBC kicked off NJIT's current four-match unbeaten streak. The Highlanders earned shutout wins over New Hampshire, UAlbany and Hartford to claim the No. 3 seed in next week's AE Tournament.
