NJIT's Business School Eclipses 1,000 Applicants for the First Time

Milestone reflects growing interest in the school's flexible bachelor’s in business program and a new major in fintech.

The Martin Tuchman School of Management (MTSM) at New Jersey Institute of Technology has eclipsed 1,000 applications from first-year students for the first time in its history, leading a wave in application increases across all five of NJIT’s schools.

The total of 1,012 applicants represents a 21% rise from last year and 61% jump from 2019. The increase was fueled by growing interest in MTSM’s flexible bachelor’s in business program, which comes in six different concentrations, and a new major in financial technology, which the school introduced last year.

The fintech major answers market demand for financial professionals who are skilled in applying computing to commerce, be it in crowdfunding, cryptocurrency, market analysis or mobile payments. Subjects include analytics, data-driven financial modeling, financial data mining and machine learning. 

Big picture, MTSM strives to deliver graduates who can thrive as management pros, corporate leaders and academic scholars in the dynamic, technology-driven world of global business.

“The key to our success is our relentless effort to integrate technology and experience into our curriculum and push the boundaries of higher education by preparing students for more technology-driven economies,” explained Oya Tukel, dean of MTSM and a professor of operations and supply chain management. “Our surge in applications certainly validates that approach and encourages us to continue to evolve with the times.”

Indeed, the rapid convergence of technology into business heightens demand for a new generation of managers, leaders and scholars. Within its STEM-­based academic environment, MTSM delivers distinctive, high-­valued academic programs that are business-­focused, tech-integrated and experientially driven to educate and prepare students to not only excel in today’s business world but become leaders in the future.

Beyond its undergraduate program, MTSM offers graduate-level courses that lead to three different degrees: a master’s in management in four concentrations (fintech, business analytics, global project management and web systems and media), a master’s in business administration in three concentrations (finance, management information systems and innovation and entrepreneurship) and a PhD in business data science. The school also offers nine different graduate certificate programs, including a new one in IT sales and analytics.
