NJIT@JerseyCity Expands with New Graduate Programs in Computing
Three master's degrees and five graduate certificate programs are now available to Ying Wu College of Computing students in the NJIT @JerseyCity location.
Programs at the Exchange Place location opened in fall 2019 offering a Master of Science in Data Science along with graduate certificates in big data, data mining and data visualization. About 100 graduate students are already studying there. The two new master of science programs being added this fall are in computer science, and in cybersecurity and privacy. Additional graduate certificates in the same topics will also be offered.
The location is convenient for professionals living or working in Manhattan, northern New Jersey and surroundings. It can be easily reached by the PATH train which connects to New York subways, by the Bergen-Hudson Light Rail and by car.
Master's degrees require 10 courses while certificate programs require four. Certificate credits can be applied to master’s degrees if students decide to continue to a full degree. Previously obtained graduate credits can also be applied.
All courses are rigorous, Ying Wu Dean Craig Gotsman noted. Students will have about two hours of homework for every hour in the classroom. "It's learning the tried and true way. There are no shortcuts in this business," he said. Still, "Some of the instructors at NJIT @JerseyCity tell me the students are very much keeping them on their toes."
All programs are offered part-time, where students typically take two courses per semester, mostly in the evenings. In the fall, due to the COVID-19, courses will be held in the converged learning mode, where students take turns attending classes in person and online, reducing classroom capacity to that dictated by social distancing requirements. Full-time options and studying at NJIT's main campus in Newark are also possible.
Applicants must have a 2.8 grade-point average and a relevant bachelors of science degree to apply. GRE scores are optional. Tuition is approximately $1,000 per credit for in-state and out-of-state students alike.
