NJIT Shuts Out Liberty 3-0, Picks Up First ASUN Victory
NJIT junior Thomas Radon scored a pair of goals and freshman keeper Samuel Reisgys recorded the shutout in the Highlanders' 3-0 win over visiting Liberty in ASUN Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
With the win, NJIT picks up three points, moving to 3-3-3 overall, 1-1-0 in the ASUN while Liberty drops its third straight match, falling to 3-6-0, 0-2-0 in the ASUN.
Radon finished the match with two goals (11', 89') and four points in the Highlanders win while Reisgys collected five saves, recording his second shutout of the season. Junior transfer Gerald Cubero scored the second Highlander goal in the 59th minute.
The home team finished with an 15-8 overall shot advantage and 5-4 in corner kicks.
NJIT struck first in the 11th minute on a free kick just outside the box by Thomas Radon, who curved the ball over the Liberty wall into the left upper 90, recording his third goal of the season.
Junior transfer Regsan Watkins nearly put the Highlanders up 2-0 in the 38th minute with a strike inside the box, hitting the right post.
Liberty with its best chance in the first half came in the 43rd minute with a blast over the crossbar for Sebastian Valdez.
At the half, NJIT held a slight edge in overall shots, 6-4, paced by Radon with a pair of shots.
In the 57th minute, Watkins gained position inside the box and took a left-footed shot but Liberty's goalkeeper made a diving save, tipping it off his finger tips.
NJIT doubled its advantage to 2-0 in the 59th minute on a blast by Gerlad Cubero off his right-foot, unassisted, on a shot low to the far post.
The Highlanders with a pair of opportunities in the 73rd minute on a hard-shot by Watkins from point-blank stopped on a two-handed save by Danny Cordero and a strike by Nicholas Kozdron, sailed high over the crossbar.
With a minute remaining in the contest, Watkins used his quick speed to beat the Liberty defense, finding Radon open inside the box, who tucked away his second goal of the match in the empty net with his left foot.
NJIT will play a mid-week non-conference match at La Salle on Tuesday in Philadelphia. Kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
