NJIT Men's and Women's Fencing Teams Shine at Drew Invitational

The NJIT men's and women's fencing teams shined at the Drew Invitational as the men started its 2022-23 campaign undefeated (6-0) while the women registered a 4-1 record Sunday afternoon.
The NJIT men recorded wins over: Clemson (26-1), Stevens (20-7), Drew (24-3 & 15-12), Army (24-3) and Vassar (21-6).
Newcomer John Griffin led the Highlander men, recording a perfect 15-0 mark in foil competition followed by teammate Cristian Candescu, the 2022 MACFA Conference individual foil champion, who went undefeated with a 14-0 overall record. Kevin Katayama, who made his first trip to the NCAA Fencing Championships in 2022, combined for a 14-2 record. The men's foil squad put together an impressive mark of 50-4 on the day.
In the men's epee competition, Niels Roubailo and Matthew Choi each making their collegiate debuts in a Highlander uniform, recorded nine victories. Choi finished the day with a 9-1 mark and Roubailo with a 9-2 record.
Freshman Adrian Figueredo led the men's saber squad with a 14-4 record in his collegiate debut followed by Christopher Cortez with a 12-4 mark. Justin Petway went 6-0.
The NJIT women registered wins against: Army (23-4), Stevens (18-9), Clemson (26-1) and Drew (16-11) with its lone loss against Wagner (14-13).
The 2022 NCAA Fencing Mid-Atlantic/South All-Region honorable mention Paloma Almodovar paced the foil squad with a 13-2 overall record while Elena Fernandez Negron combined for 11 victories.
Senior Dominika Pawlowska, who made her second straight trip to the NCAA Championships last season, picked up where she left off, leading the women's epee squad with a 13-1 overall record. Newcomer Gala Krsmanovic finished the day with an 11-3 mark. The women's epee squad combined for a 35-10 record.
In women's saber competition, seniors Cassandra Sehic and Janine Bacchus-Joseph each recorded 12 victories.
The men's and women's fencing teams will return to action on Nov. 5-6 at the Air Force Invitational.
