Leir Research Institute (LRI) Weekly Seminar Series — Martin Tuchman School of Management
In this week’s virtual seminar at 1–2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16, the LRI hosts “Coopetitive alliances: Is there a ‘tipping point’ between cooperation and competition?” The paper, co-authored by Saleh Farazi of Sharif University of Technology and Shanthi Gopalakrishnan of NJIT, focuses on alliances in high-technology sectors that are aimed at bringing about technological innovations. Past research has highlighted the simultaneity of cooperation and competition in such settings. Using a sample of 179 alliances in the biopharmaceutical industry, we explore the mechanism through which the degree of ex-ante competition between two partners relates to the level of cooperation once they ally. We also explore the importance of time to ex-post competition in this relationship. To join, go to https://njit.webex.com/meet/rroy. Upcoming seminars can be found at https://centers.njit.edu/leir/Fall-2020-and-Spring-2021-Seminars/.

Our guest speaker, Dr. Adam Gismondi, will talk about how people get news, growing distrust of information in society, and research about how bad we are at telling fact from fiction online. There will be examples of how technology is accelerating the issues, such as video-based technology used to manipulate information. Students will have a chance to win AirPods!
