NJIT Baseball Dominates UMass Lowell to Earn Series Clinching Victory
The NJIT baseball team clinched its second-straight series victory on Saturday, as the Highlanders dominated their way to a 10-2 victory at Yogi Berra Stadium.
The Highlanders (10-15, 3-2 America East) put together one of their most complete games of the season as the offense tallied 12 hits, the pitching allowed just two runs, and the defense didn't commit an error.
NJIT found itself down 1-0 for the second-straight game and just as they did in Friday's 4-3 win over the Riverhawks (8-15, 1-3 America East), the Highlanders rallied, this time with a five-run fifth inning.
After four scoreless innings, captain Luke Longo got the Highlanders on the board in the fifth, putting the ball in play with the infield back to score Andrew Eppinger. One batter later, Ray Ortiz put the Highlanders in front with a single up the middle and Michael Doyle provided the big blow of the inning with a two-run double off the top of the wall in left field.
After UML made it 5-2 in the sixth, NJIT broke the game open with three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Doyle had another RBI in the seventh and then Ortiz crushed a ball over the scoreboard in left-centerfield and inning later to make the final score 10-2.
Brandon Peterson started for NJIT and struck out seven over five innings to earn his first mound victory of the season. Veteran Joe Georgini took over from there, not allowing a run in an efficient four innings out of the bullpen to earn the save.
Five different Highlanders recorded at least two hits in the victory, including Kevin Putsky who led NJIT with three hits. Albert Choi, Cade Ladehoff, Ortiz, and Doyle each had a pair of hits.
