For Daniel A. Henderson '11 HON, whose art explores the viral allure of technology and its unintended consequences, the relocation of three of his sculptures to the ground floor of NJIT’s New Jersey Innovation Institute represents a homecoming of sorts. “Fossil Fuel” (2009), “Yellowstone” (2009) and “Premo” (2011) are now situated in an expansive new venue that allows spectators to fully appreciate the scope and grandeur of his work.

A Community in Crisis

Thumb through Jihad Peoples’ LinkedIn page and you’ll find a list of causes he supports, from civil rights and social action to disaster and humanitarian relief, poverty alleviation and economic empowerment. It’s no surprise the School of Art + Design student opted to spend his spring break half a world away in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana tilling soil, mixing concrete and sweating bullets in 100-degree weather.

NJIT has a long-established reputation as a leader in researching phenomena originating on the star closest to Earth — the Sun. Online dating has become a way of life for folks looking for love in the freewheeling, tap-and-swipe culture that dominates the 21st century. According to the Pew Research Center, online dating sites or mobile dating app usage by 18-to 24-year-olds has increased nearly threefold since 2013, while usage by 55-to 64-year-olds has doubled.

Words have consequences. Whether spoken or written, the words we choose to use matter profoundly across the spectrum of our relationships with others. They matter from the very personal communication we share with those closest to us, to achieving success in school and the workplace, to engaging in social and political debate — hopefully debate that is civil and informed given the verbal tenor of our times.

There are top-notch teachers who expertly transmit what they know in class. But more influential still are the mentors who immerse their students so thoroughly in their subject matter they feel like they’ve lived it. Those experiences can be life-changing. Ronald Rockland, chairman of NJIT’s Department of Engineering Technology, and John Wiggins, a senior lecturer in the department and coordinator of the Construction Engineering Technology and Construction Management Technology programs, clearly belong to the latter category.
