A robotic fleet built to penetrate dark and narrow cave passages, cellular studies into alcohol’s role in hastening neurodegeneration in people with HIV, plants that absorb pernicious pollutants from the air and new methods for eliminating noise from data searches are a few of the research projects that drew students back to campus laboratories this summer.

The New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), a New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) corporation, in conjunction with Brownfields Listings sponsored Brightfields 2018, a one day, national solar energy development event at the campus of NJIT in late June. NJIT welcomed several special guests to campus Aug. 7 for a showcase representing the culmination of the Ras Baraka Coding Institute (BCI) at NJIT, part of the Newark Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). The program offers participants work experience with a summer income while teaching them valuable employment skills. More than 3,000 students take part every year, 40 of whom have spent this summer at the university immersed in either coding or architecture (the latter through NJIT’s Newark Beautification Community Gardens Initiative).

NJIT Meets NJ Reverse Transfer Sept. 1 Deadline New Jersey community college students who transfer to the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) before earning a degree or certificate will find it easier to receive a credential retroactively under a new alliance between NJIT and the National Student Clearinghouse. The initiative, known as Reverse Transfer, has the potential to help thousands of New Jersey students and students from other states who transferred to New Jersey earn their associate’s degree.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) recognized the NJIT women's volleyball team for the AVCA's annual team academic award covering the 2017-18 academic year, the AVCA announced. The Highlanders earned their fifth straight team academic award, maintaining a minimum grade point average of a 3.30 for the academic year. The NJIT women were one of 164 NCAA Division I programs recognized to receive the accolade for the 2017-18 season.
