A dose of artificial intelligence is helping New Jersey Institute of Technology researchers make sense of how crowds and the individuals within them move around, leading to insights with applications in fields such as emergency management, pedestrian traffic planning, robotics, special effects and even videogames.Tomer Weiss, assistant professor of Informatics in NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing, leads the research with graduate students to see if AI can complement their understanding of the movement patterns in useful ways.

Goldwater Scholarships, among the nation’s most prestigious honors for undergraduates pursuing STEM research careers, have been awarded to two NJIT juniors whose academic excellence, research experience and professional ambitions have already set them apart.This year’s recipients are Albert Dorman Honors Scholars – Aditya Mahalingam, a biology major in the Jordan Hu College of Science and Liberal Arts (CSLA), and Arwa Ouali, a chemical engineering major in the Newark College of Engineering (NCE).

New Jersey Institute of Technology is applying an artificial intelligence layer to its institutional data resources, so that anyone in the NJIT community might find the information they need delivered faster than searching manually and perhaps served with a side of unexpected insights.The new interface is called IRIS — Institutional Resource Intelligence System — and it’s available now for pilot users. A university-wide rollout is due in the next few weeks.

A live Bloomberg Radio broadcast from NJIT put the university’s environmental research into a much wider public conversation, as hosts Scarlet Fu and Paul Sweeney brought their weekday “Bloomberg Intelligence” program to campus and mixed NJIT faculty and researchers into the show’s regular coverage.

NJIT’s Dana Knox Research Showcase filled the Bloom Wellness and Events Center with student research spanning science, engineering, computing, management and the humanities. When Chris Wunderlich was finishing his final semester at New Jersey Institute of Technology, he had two job offers sitting in front of him. One was from Picatinny Arsenal, the U.S. Army's premier research and manufacturing hub for weapons systems, where he would have gone deep into warhead design. The other was from DeSisti, an Italian lighting and rigging company headquartered on Route 22 in North Jersey. He took the job with the Italians.

The NJIT men's volleyball swept the weekend series from visiting Charleston (WV) 3-1 Saturday afternoon in EIVA Conference men's volleyball action inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.With the win, NJIT moves to 16-8 overall on the season, 7-3 in the EIVA. The Highlanders are one of three Division I teams undefeated at home (12-0) joining UCLA (9-0) and Maryland Eastern Shore (8-0).NJIT, which hit .286 for the match, dropped the first set 25-17 but bounced back in the next three sets to secure the 3-1 home victory, 31-29, 25-15 and 25-22.

The Albert Dorman Honors College brought together students, alumni, faculty and staff on April 8 for its second annual Alumni Recognition and Dorman Awards Reception, an evening at NJIT’s Highlander Pub that celebrated achievement across generations of the honors college community.
