WHO: NJ Advanced Manufacturing Talent Network (ManufactureNJ), through its Dream It. Do It. New Jersey Program, will hold the Build It Better NJ State Championship 2017, a one-day competition designed for pre-college students as a bridge experience between STEM disciplines and entrepreneurship. ManufactureNJ is hosted at and managed by New Jersey Institute of Technology. Other lead organizers of the event are the Piscataway Public Library and MacEwan Consulting, a full-service educational consultancy.

WHAT: The Build It Better NJ State Championship 2017 will welcome high school teams that have advanced from earlier competitions held at their respective schools. Each team will be challenged to design, build, test and market a consumer product, all while gaining experience with and exposure to real-world factors affecting the product-development pipeline.

Participating teams represent West Side High School (Newark), North Bergen High School, Trenton Central High School, Mercer County Technical School (Trenton) and High Point Regional High School (Sussex). All students will receive a certificate and event T-shirt; students on the winning team will each receive a trophy and their school will be awarded a plaque.

Mercer County Technical School students work together at their school’s Build It Better design challenge.

WHEN: June 2, 2017. 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

WHERE: Mercer County Community College, Trenton, N.J.

WHY: The Build It Better model provides a fun, stimulating and educational experience that fosters and reinforces the team-building, product-pipeline, presentation and design-thinking skills essential to succeeding in today’s ever-changing workforce and entrepreneurial market.

"We look forward to seeing these young people again in a couple of years through our MechaFORCE-Registered Internship Manufacturing (M-RIM) program,” said Michael Marchetti, manager, ManufactureNJ. “M-RIM is an aligned NJIT initiative which is an ‘earn while learning’ program helping millennials and Gen Xers find well-paying manufacturing jobs while completing industry-valued credentials and academic degrees."

TO ATTEND: The press and general public are invited to observe.
