In this unprecedented era of the COVID-19 pandemic and many other disruptive occurrences, the landscapes of society, industry and academics have been and will continue to be reshaped. Resilience and sustainability have become more imperative than ever before, and leveraging innovative technology to embrace the new normal is a strategic necessity. Biotech, for example, has changed the practice of medicine dramatically over the years, with millions of patients worldwide benefiting from the discovery, development and delivery of innovative medicines that treat grievous illnesses, such as COVID-19.
On Aug. 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Henry J. and Erna D. Leir Research Institute for Business, Technology, and Society (LRI) — part of NJIT’s Martin Tuchman School of Management (MTSM) — will hold a virtual conference to explore disruptive technologies and business solutions aimed at addressing the prevailing health and societal issues. “Disruptive Technologies, Regulations, and Business: Implications in the Biotech Industry” will bring together experts from business, industry and government, and feature keynote speakers Derek Choy, president and co-founder, Aktana; Saul Lee, director, Office of Testing and Research, Office of Pharmaceutical Quality, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, FDA; and Liang Schweizer, co-founder and CEO, HiFiBiO Therapeutics.

About the LRI
The Henry J. and Erna D. Leir Research Institute for Business, Technology, and Society was established through the generosity of The Leir Foundation. Henry J. Leir, whose life spanned from 1900-1998, was an international industrialist, visionary and philanthropist. He was known for his charitable endeavors as the founder of three foundations, and his generous gifts to hospitals, universities, museums and underprivileged children have widely benefited mankind. LRI focuses on some of the most critical global challenges facing business and society today, including the impacts of disruptive societal, operational and environmental events on sustainability, resiliency and well-being. LRI has an integrated, dual mission of conducting innovative research and targeted outreach necessary to realize the institute’s overarching goal of helping businesses to become more eco-efficient, resilient and sustainable, and helping society to improve the well-being and quality of life, especially for the disadvantaged.
