NJIT is proud to celebrate Juneteenth (which the university is observing on Friday, June 20). This federal and state holiday commemorates the official end of slavery in the United States, which occurred on June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger brought news to Galveston, Texas, that enslaved Black people were free.
During this Juneteenth holiday, and every day, I hope that we all will consider how important it is to continue the effort to secure justice and equality for everyone. As we observe this Juneteenth holiday, I am proud of the welcoming and inclusive university community that we have cultivated at NJIT.
