Grant Will Help Support Greater Number of Local Pre-College Students
Since 1924, Victoria Foundation has awarded more than $300 million in grants to benefit Newark. One of the country’s oldest private foundations, Victoria dedicates itself to improving the lives of children and families in Newark, and protecting water resources and preserving open spaces throughout the Garden State.
Among its many recipients is NJIT’s Center for Pre-College Programs (CPCP), established in 1979 to “increase access to scientific and technological fields among traditionally underrepresented populations and to improve the teaching of science and mathematics in secondary and elementary schools.”
With the foundation and the center aligned in their missions to enhance educational outcomes for young people, Victoria’s Education Committee recently awarded CPCP a two-year grant of $75,000 per year. The funds will be used to support at least 80 middle school and high school students from Newark taking part in CPCP’s summer 2020 and summer 2021 Early College Preparatory Programs.
“In summer 2019, funding from Victoria Foundation enabled us to reduce program tuition for many Newark students,” noted CPCP Executive Director Jacqueline Cusack. “This two-year grant award increases our capacity to serve greater numbers of Newark pre-college students, which is in line with NJIT’s strategic plan, with the bonus of providing tuition support for summer program offerings.”
“Victoria Foundation’s mission is centered on families in the city of Newark,” said Irene Cooper-Basch, Victoria Foundation’s executive director. “We are so proud to partner with NJIT on its stellar pre-college programs. Together, over the past four years, we’ve been able to triple the number of Newark high school students participating in these summer programs. Bravo!”
