In data analysis, it’s the outlier information that is usually the most interesting, yet sometimes that information goes unrecognized by the most common evaluation methods because they make inaccurate assumptions.

But now Michael Houle, a senior university lecturer at New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Ying Wu College of Computing, along with collaborators in Australia, Denmark and Serbia have become outliers themselves for developing the math to prove that breaking those assumptions can work better than conventional methods.

Neel Patil, a new graduate in computer science and applied mathematics, is following his Pi Kappa Phi fraternity brothers like All-Star baseball outfielder Jim Edmonds and broadcaster Rich Eisen into the sports business.

Patil will be a software engineer at FanDuel starting in July. It’s a perfect fit for the diehard basketball fan, who said he’s never made money from betting on his favorite NBA team, the Boston Celtics, because he always picks the over — he can’t stand to admit that they might not dominate, even when it’s a fiscally irrational decision.

Preaching patience, courage and resilience, MGM Construction Co. President and CEO Marjorie Perry urged the Class of 2024 at New Jersey Institute of Technology to become lifelong learners as they apply their imagination to real-world challenges.

Perry, an NJIT alumna who serves on its Foundation Board of Directors, called on the undergraduates earning bachelor’s degrees to be “agents of change in our communities” and build a future “that we can all be proud of.”

New Jersey Institute of Technology served up a full day of fanfare as its advanced degree graduates walked across the stage in the Wellness and Events Center in three commencement ceremonies on May 15. A bourgeoning interest in AI that began in high school created a serendipitous fast track to success for Vaisnavi Nemala '24, who came to NJIT as a student in the Ying Wu College of Computing and the Albert Dorman Honors College just in time to join the newly launched B.S. in Data Science in fall 2021.

New Jersey Institute of Technology has named Jamie Payton, professor and chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at Temple University, to lead its Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) as dean beginning July 1, 2024.

Speaker after speaker reinforced what Kevin Belfield, dean of the College of Science and Liberal Arts at New Jersey Institute of Technology, said about the university’s Math Success Initiative: “It takes a village to put a program like this together.”

The speakers were at a campus ceremony celebrating the first students to experience MSI and graduate from NJIT: Okyere Boateng, Brian Herrera-Calle, Catherine Ochoa and Steff Pitti.

For two decades, the Ying Wu College of Computing Capstone Program has been an instrumental part of NJIT’s academic experience. The program places students in real-world assignments with leading companies, government organizations and community stakeholders to produce creative, multidisciplinary-driven solutions.

New Jersey Institute of Technology has a new Extended Reality (XR) Laboratory on campus, where students and faculty can learn to use augmented- and virtual-reality as a learning and teaching tool.

The lab is now open in Guttenberg Information Technologies Center, room 1402, across from the NJIT makerspace. It’s operated by the digital learning office and complements Ying Wu College of Computing’s MIXR Lab, where researchers study XR itself, on the third floor of the same building.

An all-freshman team, Rackify, was the top NJIT winner and third overall at this year’s MakeNJIT hardware hackathon, creating a smart bicycle rack that automatically locks your ride by activating an RFID reader and extending an arm through the spokes or frame.
