For the first time since joining the ASUN Conference in 2015, the NJIT women's soccer team has begun league play with a 2-0 record.
The Highlanders held off the North Alabama Lions, 2-1, to improve to 5-3-2 on the season and earn back-to-back ASUN victories to open conference play.
Jessica Aseng scored NJIT's first goal - and the first of her career - in the 16th minute. A Highlander corner kick led to a shot by Fiona Wright that was blocked by a North Alabama defender. The ricocheted ball went towards the the UNA and Aseng was able to beat the goalkeeper to the ball to head home the score.
Lauren Chamberlain doubled the Highlander lead in the 69th minute with an impressive individual effort. Chamberlain tapped the ball over a North Alabama defender before it went out of bounds, took one touch and blasted an upper-left shot past the Lions' keeper.
UNA cut NJIT's lead in half in the 78th minute and had a couple of shots afterwards but the Highlander defense was able to keep the Lions at bay to secure the win.
Once again, NJIT was outshot by its opponent (17-7) but converted when the shots mattered the most.
NEXT UP NJIT will return home to face North Florida at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 6.
