Freshman Alejandra Zuniga has been selected America East Conference Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season and league office announced on Monday.
Zuniga, who picked up her second consecutive Rookie of the Week honor, averaged 22.0ppg, 4.5rpg and 4.5apg in a 1-1 week for the Highlanders.
The 5-foot-6 guard scored a career-best 31 points to lead NJIT to a 75-70 home victory over visiting Binghamton Wednesday evening. The 31 points scored by Zuniga are the most points scored by a freshman since the 2007-08 season when Jessica Gerald '11 scored a school-record 37 points against Cal-State Bakersfield.
Zuniga is the second player to score 30+ in conference play this year, joining Adrianna Smith who has tallied 30+ points three times.
She finished Wednesday's game 10-for-18 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. The five assists dished out by Zuniga is also a new personal-best mark.
On Saturday at Vermont, Zuniga finished with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists.
For the season, Zuniga has scored in double-digits in 20 games, averaging 12.5ppg, which ranks sixth in the America East, 10th in field goal percentage (44.2%; 114-258) and assists (66; 2.5apg).
Zuniga and the Highlanders will wrap up the America East Conference road slate on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Bryant. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
