Dear Highlanders,

We are saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Daljit Singh Ahluwalia, who joined NJIT in 1986 as chair of the Department of Mathematics following an extraordinary career at the NYU Courant Institute, where he worked at the forefront of Applied Mathematics with a focus on wave propagation.

Under Daljit's leadership, the department became the Department of Mathematical Sciences and experienced tremendous growth. Daljit helped found the Center for Applied Mathematics and Statistics and was instrumental in the creation of NJIT's Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences program while contributing greatly to the design and implementation of multiple other academic programs. In addition, he served as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, where he ensured that NJIT was well known and respected in the research community. Daljit recruited outstanding faculty and drove NJIT to become recognized nationally and internationally as a hub for research in applied mathematics and statistics.

Daljit was a leader, an innovator, a friend, and a mentor to many, and his passing is a tremendous loss for the NJIT community. Our condolences go out to all Daljit's family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones at this time.

Sincerely,
Teik C. Lim
