U.S. News & World Report Commends NJIT Online Graduate Programs
Four of NJIT's online graduate programs placed among the top 100 in this year's U.S. News & World Report rankings of American universities.
While studying online became an important academic offering in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NJIT has long offered both fully online and partial, or hybrid, online degree programs as part of the university’s vision of a global campus.
The publication ranked Highlander online master's degrees 27th-best for information technology, 56th for engineering, 91st for business generally and 100th for the Master's of Business Administration specifically.
"NJIT’s online graduate programs are consistently ranked among the country’s best," said Sotirios Ziavras, vice provost for graduate study. "Our online programs enroll high-quality graduate students who acquire very competitive backgrounds in their fields of study. The value of graduate degrees cannot be underestimated when it comes to career advancement."
Efforts are underway to strengthen online graduate programs at Ying Wu College of Computing. In addition to information technology, the college also offers an online graduate degree in data science which is closely coupled with NJIT's Institute for Data Science.
"While our online M.S. program in information technology is extremely popular, we offer many other online M.S. degrees, such as computer science, data science, cybersecurity and privacy, computing and business, and information systems. Students in these programs receive exactly the same high-quality instruction and exactly the same degree upon graduation as our regular students. We have invested in the technology and methodologies for efficient and effective delivery of the course materials for the benefit of our students," Ying Wu Dean Craig Gotsman said.
Interesting things are also happening for graduate students in Martin Tuchman School of Management, such as faculty study of digital transformation during the pandemic, along with the creation of a data observatory where people can collaboratively study the technology trends that make the business world move.
"Martin Tuchman School of Management has been developing and delivering online programs for many years. We consider our online education expertise as one of the strengths that we built for many years, and this is the reason for our recent top 100 rankings. I am very proud of this achievement," Dean Oya Tukel added.
NJIT’s engineering graduate offerings have been nationally ranked for 17 straight years, according to U.S. News and World Report. The online programs offer flexible learning opportunities and include degrees in civil engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, engineering management, power and energy systems, and transportation. Programs in mechanical and biomedical engineering are forthcoming, according to Newark College of Engineering Dean Moshe Kam.
"A large number of students in our online curricula told us that the availability of online offerings made a significant difference for them. The ability to participate in classes without commuting to campus, the ability to review lectures and demonstrations anytime, and the provisions to communicate with the instructor offline, allowed these students to continue their studies and pursue future careers," said Kam.
