NJIT Jumps in Global Rankings by QS, Led by International Metrics
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has improved its standing in a global ranking conducted by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a top collegiate evaluation firm based in Europe. NJIT now ranks in the top half of more than 1,400 schools evaluated worldwide, based on almost 2,500 colleges considered. Only 201 schools from the U.S. made the cut.
NJIT was particularly successful in its rankings for international students and saw a substantial jump in the institution’s ranking for international faculty.
In the 2023 QS rankings report, NJIT had 28 international students per 100 and almost 33 international faculty per 100, well above the medians of less than nine in both categories. NJIT's overall ranking now is 160 worldwide for the international students category, and in the international faculty ranking, NJIT long-jumped 59 places forward as reported by QS. In addition, NJIT increased its score for normalized citations per faculty to 72, far surpassing the global median of 43.
"Our improved performance in the QS World University Rankings is a testament to NJIT's international reach and recognition, achieved through our mission of education, research, economic development and engagement," NJIT Provost and Senior Executive Vice President Fadi P. Deek said. "NJIT continues to attract students and thought leaders from around the globe to our diverse campus."
QS also considered academic reputation, employer reputation and faculty-student ratio. New data points for upcoming rankings — employment outcomes and international researcher networks — were captured this year as well. Employment outcomes, which consider job placement rate and alumni featured in notable lists, were highly regarded by other recent surveys such as a Princeton Review ranking which placed NJIT at No. 11 nationwide for career placement. Princeton Review also placed NJIT in the 33rd spot for best value, while Payscale.com ranked NJIT in the top 2%. Highlander alumni like Dina Ayman, cited on the recent Forbes 30 Under 30 list for enterprise information technology, are further helping to raise the university's profile.
“An education from NJIT offers an excellent return on investment and provides a pathway to career success,” said NJIT President Joel S. Bloom. “NJIT is ranked No. 14 nationally on Money’s Best Colleges list and is rated No. 1 nationally by Forbes for the upward mobility of students from the lowest income brackets. This ranking speaks to the value of an NJIT education and the global impact of our university.”
NJIT also fared well in other recent rankings. Times Higher Education said NJIT is in the top 100 for sustainable institutions. The Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce placed NJIT in the top 10% nationwide for return on investment.
