A Free Italian Vacation, in Music

Karan Pinoci, music director and conductor of the NJIT String Ensemble, will conduct a free performance of the Essex County Summer Orchestra August 6 starting at 3 p.m. at Livingston High School, 30 Robert Harp Drive, Livingston, New Jersey. With the title “Italian Vacation,” the concert will feature the music of Italian composers and themes. The concert will also feature Willy Falk, the Tony-nominated star of Miss Saigon.
Students and Alumni of the Rutgers-NJIT Theatre Program to Present a Short Film in Two Screenings

Rodney Reyes of the Theatre Arts and Technology Program at NJIT, along with current students and alumni from the Rutgers-NJIT Theatre Program, will present their film "Vacant Heart" as an official selection of both the Newark International Film Festival in September and as a finalist in the I'm So Newark Short Film Contest "Finalist Films" Screening Thursday, July 27.
Women's Volleyball Earns Fourth Straight AVCA Academic Award

The American Volleyball Coaches Association recognized the NJIT women's volleyball team for the AVCA's annual team academic award covering the 2016-17 academic year, the AVCA announced. The Highlanders earned their fourth straight team academic award, maintaining a minimum grade-point average of a 3.30 for the academic year. The NJIT women were one of 145 NCAA Division I programs recognized to receive the accolade for the 2016-17 season.

Sahla Syed and Soojin Kim have spent the summer researching high-tech approaches toward diabetes treatment, Syed with nanotechnology-controlled medications and Kim through the creation of insulin-producing pancreas cells. Niyam Shah, by contrast, hopes to harness the prickly sweetgum seed pod, a homely staple of sunny yards throughout the state, as a low-cost, natural water filter.

A Place for Space at Summer Science Camp

“Planetary landings” were the activity of the day July 13 in NJIT’s Campus Center Atrium. There, a sea of yellow-shirted tweens assembled in small teams to design, construct and test model spacecrafts capable of “protecting an astronaut during a planetary landing.” Their building materials were household items ranging from pipe cleaners to duct tape, and their time to perfect their spacecrafts before presenting them to a judging panel was just 35 minutes.
